Clair Volkwyn, Editor of Smart Energy International, interviews Manoj Kumar, CEO of Powerley at DistribuTECH 2019. Exploring the impact of home energy management and the smart home within the utility sector, Kumar details the utility transformation taking place by way of new technology and business models.

Clair Volkwyn: Home energy management and the smart home has the potential to have a substantial impact on utilities. What results have your partner utilities seen and how have consumers been impacted?

Manoj Kumar: What we have done with Powerley is unlock that AMI data for the customer. So now through our solution, which basically becomes an extension of the AMI meter itself, customers can see in real-time how much energy they are consuming. Here, the customer value proposition from the AMI meter comes into play. What this does for the utility is it gives them a deeper engagement with the customer besides bill pay and outage which can be negative experiences. Now they are able to see customer enjoy interacting with the energy they are consuming. The [energy efficiency and customer engagement] result we are seeing are substantial.
